A little bit of work on everything - 2 hours

Spending a bunch of time on just messing around with the empennage. With the oversight of the neighborhood kids, I set the MK-319-BS rivets on the  left elevator.

I then spent time inspecting the trailing edge on my rudder. I have a bit of gap in the trailing edge. I think this is due to a combination of the 3M tape and my countersinks may have been a touch shallow. I have been pondering this a while and I have half a mind to fill the very slight gap with 3M 2216 epoxy adhesive. I will send an email to vans support to double check if that will be acceptable.

I then set out to set the outstanding rivets on the HS-0005/00006 to the forward HS spar. I managed to set 3 of the 4 large rivets, but I had quite the trouble with the last one. Folded it over, tried again. Folded it over. Now the hole was loose enough that I have to go up a size to a AN470AD5 rivet. My edge distance clearance is really good here (0.502") so It's minor.

Enough for today!

Rolling the left elevator leading edge - 3 hours

Again, I set off to complete rolling the leading edge of the left elevator. Just like the right elevator and the rudder. It's not fun, nor is it quick!

Rolling the right elevator leading edge - 4 hours

I set out to roll the elevator skins. From working on the rudder, I know this will not be pleasant.  I went to Rona and picked up some 3/4" J-hooks and bolted them to the table. I then used gorilla tape to tape the entire length of the skin edge to my 3/4" aluminum pipe. I laid out garbage bags on the table to help the assembly slide while rolling. Just like the rudder....It's not easy to roll, and much massaging needed to be done to get the pieces to fit together nice. Very time consuming, but I managed to get the right elevator done.

I picked up a cheap pop rivet tool from Canadian Tire and ground the side of it off. I also ground a bit of an angle on the fitting so it now will allow me to set the top most pop rivet in the rudder!

Rolling the rudder leading edge - 3 hours

I know this. I really don't care for rolling the leading edges. It's not fun. I used the method Van's describes in the manual. Using 3/4" and 1" aluminum tubing, with the help of a friend we rolled the edges but it just plain sucks. It's very hard to describe how it feels, it just doesn't work well. You really need to take your time and roll, check, remove the pipe and use your hands, Put the pipe back on and roll some more, check, fiddle, etc, etc. By the end, some holes line up well, some feel forced. Ahh...I just don't enjoy this part. Took a long time to get the rudder done. I still have to figure out a way to get the top most pop rivet set. My puller is too big to get in there!
